Nathan Hui-Yi (pronounced "Hway-Yee”) is a Chinese-Australian rapper, producer & multi-instrumentalist from the Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

An emerging and pioneering artist in Chinese-Australian rap, the 2024 Triple J x NIDA Competition winner spotlights the underrepresented voice of Asian artists whilst reshaping the Australian hip-hop scene with a fresh new story and sonic aesthetic.

Hui-Yi does things in his own strikingly different way. Fearless in breaking the mold of stereotypical rap tropes, Hui Yi's cinematic bars stand apart with his distinctive vocal sound, bold subject matter, and ultra-unique & sophisticated beats.

Initially beginning his artistic journey as a producer, Hui-Yi is also already renowned for his inventive use of electronic instruments in his beats that often incorporate jazz, world music and unusual sonic textures. His unconventional sampling techniques produce a wide musical spectrum; everything from soothing lo-fi beats to forward-thinking jazz-infused future-bap.

Hui-Yi’s initial work quickly garnered national radio airplay on stations like Triple J, Double J & SBS Chill. His remix of Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE” was the feature track and interview on Dave Ruby Howe’s Hottest 100 show on Triple J.

Hui-Yi has also collaborated as a producer on records like “DIE WITH A BUZZ” (with Detroit MC Sam Be Yourself from Netflix's "Rhythm + Flow" rap show). An underground hit, their singles "DREAMS BECOME REALITY" & “DIE WITH A BUZZ ” caught the attention of taste-makers and achieved placement on major official Spotify hip-hop playlists like “Beats n Bars” & “The Hybrid”.

Hui-Yi has performed at festivals such as WOMADelaide and OzAsia and was also selected for the first TikTok Songhubs in Australia, as well as the NIDA x Triple J Competition.

His album “FOR THE LAST TIME” was produced, written and arranged by Hui-Yi and released world-wide on 13th September.
